How It All Started

Derek: About 15 years ago, I walked away from an engineering desk job and into the craft beer world—and I’ve never regretted it. I’ve helped start and run breweries like Cutters Brewing Co., Danny Boy Beer Works, Centerpoint Brewing Co., and Union Brewing Co., and I still love every part of the process.

Jess: My craft beer journey started when Danny Boy Beer Works opened down the street from my dental office. I’d stop in all the time, and Derek would explain what was happening, how beer was made, and let me sample what was on tap. Somewhere between the beer and the conversations, I fell in love—with craft beer and with him.

Our Favorite Beers

Ask us our favorite Union beer and you’ll probably hear the same answer. Sexi Mexi, our Mexican Lager, is always at the top—Derek with a lime, Jess with a tajín rim and extra lime. We also both love Space Ballz, our Schwarzbier. They’re easy to drink, full of flavor, and exactly the kind of beers we want to be known for.

Life Outside the Brewery

When we’re not at Union, we try to slow things down and enjoy life.

Derek: I’m usually hiking, backpacking, camping, or traveling when I get the chance. If I’m home, a good movie on the couch does the trick. Fun fact: I have an engineering degree, but only used it for two years.

Jess: I love concerts, traveling, discovering new food and breweries, karaoke with my sisters, and game nights—even if I’m terrible at them. I enjoy being outdoors, but mostly I just love spending time with people I care about. And yes, I once tried out for American Idol.
